Culture describes how things are and acts as lens through another different world angle. Including cultural studies as part of the English acquisition has been a very interesting part of combining the students’ motivation and attitude towards learning a new language with interesting knowledge on English speaking countries, which represents an approach to different identities and ways of life.
Our 5th grade students have been working on India as part of this enrichment and multicultural approach. Part of this cultural spot has been connected to geographical key aspects, music, festivals and symbols. In this occasion, and to finalize their project on India, students have prepared different posters to decorate their classes with some of the different symbols: peacocks being the national animal in India, rangoli as a symbol of good luck, Taj Mahal as the most representative building and the lotus, being the national flower.
The main goal was to reinforce some of the vocabulary learned in class in an entertaining way that could help to improve this language learning experience as well as portraying their creativity and artistical skills. And what a colourful corridor with such beautiful decorations!
